This month we are taking a break from our usual legal information posts to let you know about an exciting development for the firm. D. Martin Sanderson, who joined our firm a few years ago as an associate, became a partner in Robson, O’Connor LLP as of August 1st, 2020.
Martin attended the University of British Columbia where he majored in both psychology and philosophy. In his time at UBC, he focused his studies on cross-cultural psychology and the social psychology of moral decision making.
After UBC, Martin moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia to attend the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, and in 2015, received his Juris Doctor degree.
After graduation from Dalhousie, Martin first worked as a research assistant with Dalhousie’s Health Law Institute, then joined the in-house legal team at Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (“CAMH”) in Toronto, as a student-at-law.
Martin then returned to BC in early 2017 to marry the love of his life, set down roots on Vancouver Island, and join the team at Robson, O’Connor LLP as an associate.
Martin has a keen interest in the intersection of mental health and the law. During his time at Dalhousie he obtained a specialization certificate in Health Law and Policy and conducted extensive research into various approaches to involuntary psychiatric treatment, both across Canada and around the world. Here in BC, he is involved in a program that provides advocacy for individuals who have been involuntarily admitted to psychiatric care under BC’s Mental Health Act.
Here at Robson, O’Connor LLP, Martin takes great pride in providing friendly, accessible assistance to the community. He spends a large portion of his time helping community members with their wills, estates, and incapacity planning. He also spends a great deal of time helping executors obtain grants of probate and navigate the responsibilities and risks associated with administering an estate, in addition to assisting clients with business and family law matters.
When he is not buried in a book, Martin loves getting out in nature, camping, hiking, biking through the woods, and kayaking whenever he gets the chance.
We are very pleased to welcome Martin on board as a partner!
